L-3’s IRIS™ Infrared Imaging System Certified for King Air Models

LAKELAND, Fla., April 8, 2008 – L-3 Communications Avionics Systems announced today that it has received an FAA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its IRIS™ Infrared Imaging System aboard multiple King Air platforms, as well as Parts Manufacturer Approval (PMA). This STC includes an Approved Model List for many of the King Air 90, 200 and 300 series aircraft. The L-3 IRIS installation includes the KMD-850 Multi-Function Display. FAA approval within the STC allows for display on virtually any certified cockpit display that contains an appropriate RS-170 video input. IRIS is on display at Sun ‘n Fun through April 13 in Hall D, booth 82.

“With several thousand King Air aircraft flying today, this STC will open an important market for IRIS,” said Larry Riddle, vice president of business development for L-3 Avionics Systems. “It will give more pilots the opportunity to experience the increased safety an infrared imaging system can provide. STCs for other airframes will follow.”

The camera mounting utilizes an existing approved fiberglass fairing that L-3 has been supplying to the C90 market under its original STC. Easy installation and commonality across the King Air models provides a cost-effective solution for adding enhanced vision and increasing the pilot’s situational awareness. IRIS was the first low-cost enhanced vision system for General Aviation to receive an STC and PMA.

IRIS is the latest in L-3 Avionics System’s long line of situational awareness products flying. Using infrared imaging, IRIS enables pilots to see obstacles ahead of the aircraft that may not be visible due to poor conditions or darkness. This provides an added layer of safety, especially when taxiing or landing. The camera uses unique sensor technology to provide a high resolution infrared image with a level of fidelity comparable to more expensive units. Unlike other infrared sensors, the L-3 sensor allows the IRIS system to provide a stable, continuous image regardless of abrupt maneuvers or turns into direct sunlight.
