L-3 Avionics Systems GH-Series Selected for F-15 and F/A-18 Upgraded Avionics Package

LE BOURGET, France, June 20, 2011 – L-3 Avionics Systems announced today that Boeing Defense, Space & Security has selected its next-generation GH-series of electronic standby instrument systems as standard equipment on the international variants of the F-15 and F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft. New F-15 aircraft will carry two GH-4200 Reference Standby Display (RSD) instruments, while the F/A-18 will be fitted with one RSD and one GH-4000 Reference Standby Display Repeater (RSDR). Deliveries are slated to begin in July 2012.

"This award preserves L-3’s incumbent position on these dominant weapon systems, and it expands the presence of our next-generation solid-state equipment into the tactical aircraft market," said Larry Riddle, vice president of business development for L-3 Avionics Systems. "With our ruggedized design and precise software, the GH-series is a critical component of these high-performance platforms."

Built for military applications and qualified to full military standards, the advanced GH-4200 RSD and GH-4000 RSDR are the newest additions to L-3’s next-generation GH-series of electronic standby instruments. Both models are designed to provide attitude, altitude and airspeed in a layout that matches the aircraft’s primary systems, along with optional interfaces for heading, slip/skid, vertical speed and navigation data. An integrated air-data sensor card and direct pitotstatic connections eliminate the need for a remote-mounted air data computer, resulting in a system that is both powerful and compact.

GH-series instruments also feature:

  • Easy adaption to most flight decks with standard 3-ATI mounting cutout
  • Full range of navigation interfaces with modes for FMS, NAV, VOR, ILS and TACAN
  • Increased reliability and performance over electromechanical systems
  • Installer-programmable data configuration module and field-loadable software
  • Certified ARINC 429 outputs and option for internal accelerometers
  • Night vision goggle compatibility (for military versions)
  • Minimal power draw
  • Exceptional readability with active matrix LCD screen
  • Customizable layout to match EFIS displays

All GH-series instruments were developed with L-3 Avionics Systems’ advanced solid-state expertise, which has made the company a leader in electronic standby instrument systems for military and high-end business aircraft.

The F-15s sold internationally are modernized versions of the U.S. F-15E platform. The F/A-18 Super Hornet is a multi-role aircraft used extensively by the U.S. Navy and Royal Australian Air Force.
